Lindsay Shaughnessy, a former math educator who began her role as the college’s PACE Director this academic year, is using her teaching experience to help students reach their full potential.
“My background in math education and tutoring has provided insight into the individual struggles of college life and what it takes to be academically successful in the college setting,” she said.
PACE, the Panther Academic Center for Excellence, is located in the Moshell Learning Center and Tutoring Lab. Shaughnessy’s job involves coordinating and overseeing academic coaching, accessibility services, supplemental instruction and testing services.
“In providing academic support services, I hope to enhance the student experience here at LaGrange College,” she said.
Shaughnessy said she is working with her team on implementing supplemental instruction, using students as teachers/leaders.
“We currently have two courses being covered by supplemental instruction leaders, English 1101 and Math 0100,” she said. “We are seeing great promise in the program.”
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, hiking with her husband and two dogs and watching the Atlanta Braves.
Before coming to LC, she served as a math teacher at Smiths Station High School in Alabama, an academic tutor at Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City, Alabama, a math tutor and teacher at Southern Union State Community College in Opelika, Alabama, and an assistant director of the Science and Math Academic Resources and Tutoring Center at the Marietta campus of Kennesaw State University, where she also received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics.
“My work has provided experience at the high school, college and university level, enabling a greater understanding of student's academic experiences,” she said.
An open-door policy with her students is important to her.
“I want students to know that they can come in and talk to me for any reason,” Shaughnessy said.
The hours of operation for PACE services are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drop-in academic tutoring is offered Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., with daytime hours available by appointment.
